thank you's and accomplishments - Indonesia residency

Before going off to Indonesia for my next residency, I made a list of things I wanted to accomplish.  It was a hefty and ambitious list.  But something that I had properly prepared for.

Now, back in Manila, I go back to this list.

... and I get to put a check mark on each item.

As far as my experience in residencies in foreign countries go, this is remarkable.  I have a lot of folks to thank.

From the presentation poster Mang Agos created,
to the documentation photos and videos of Evni Schumi.

From the cooperative spirit of wood artist Anex for the Auma belt (topic of my next post),
to the generous demo that Sudarman gave me in making his recycled plastic products.

From the calm efficiency of Mang Nana in getting the gallery space ready for the presentation and exhibit, to the warm presence of Bimut in the kitchen of the JaF house.

From the kind guidance of Arief and Loranita in seeing that my residency go smoothly,
to the support given by Umi and Abi, especially in making my t-shirt workshop sessions with the school kids and with the deaf women happen (will talk more about that soon).

busy was the first week in jatiwangi artist residency

It was a busy week, happily filled with meet ups with local artists and artisans.  I am indebted to the work of my in-charge, who also happens to be a funny woman.

I've already finished one piece for the Wear of Needs project and have a few more works in progress

Jatiwangi Art Factory houses an actual factory for making clay rooftiles. Yestrday, in one of my walks, I ended up in the clay factory.  There were some small slabs of clay left on the work table.  I picked it up and got hooked instantly. Hmmm, and the first thing I ended up making?

Toblerone!

The clay tiles are everywhere.  I noticed them looking down on the city from the airplane. On the village mosque, as instruments (!), on the streets etc.

At the FIP Alumni Fashion Show

This was my take on the theme "Royalty" for the FIP Alumni Fashion Show held last year.  When I created this ensemble, I considered the young international royals of today.  This look as well as the other look I created for the show are less traditional and conservative than the looks we often see the royals don.  There's a bit more frilly fun in this ensemble, which was modeled by Stephanie Retuya - the Philippines' bet for the 1st edition of Asia's Next Top Model (the TV show).
